Quintana overlooking Geraint Thomas for Giro?

Thomas more scary than Nibali?

Maybe they just didn’t have TV access in Bogota, Columbia where Nairo Quintana has been training before his imminent return to Europe to win the Giro d’Italia.

That would explain how Quintana missed watching this week’s Tour of the Alps and missed watching Giro rival Geraint Thomas win the overall even without a strong Team Sky lineup behind him.

Thomas emerged from the Alps full of confidence and pronounced himself ready to aim for the win in the Giro. But we’re assuming that Quintana couldn’t even get a lame and low quality pirate stream of Thomas winning the Tour of the Alps.

How else to explain that today the Colombian named two time Giro d’Italia winner Vincenzo Nibali as his chief rival despite the fact Nibali has shown little evidence of his form, good or bad. He’s been invisible, but in Quintana’s mind is still the most dangerous threat.

Meanwhile Geraint Thomas was ripping it up in the Tour of the Alps, winning stage three and taking the overall from Thibaut Pinot. That’s to go along with his strong performance in Tirreno–Adriatico, where he won stage two and finished 5th overall. Despite all this, Quintana prefers to point to Nibali and his brand new, largely unproven Bahrain–Merida squad.

The Shark of Messina is well known for his “tranquillo” approach to grand tours and the prep work required. having won the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana, he’s got the palmares to justify a high level of confidence.

Nevertheless, any objective comparison of season results so far between Thomas and Nibali, would seem to put the Welshman right up there with the Italian for a Giro win. So perhaps it’s just proof that Bogota isn’t a great place to watch the Tour of the Alps.
