Goss up to speed?

In a recent interview sprinter Harley Goss (Orica-GreenEdge) said that he was already twice the rider he was last season.

The implication being that his training this year was ahead of schedule and that he’d be flying shortly. We’re curious exactly when that’s going to happen.

In the final stage of the Tour of Oman, it was the French national champion Nacer Bouhanni who took the sprint by a bike length ahead of Goss with Taylor Phinney taking third. Close but no dagger as they say in the Sultanate of Oman.

Oman, the second act after Qatar in the Belgium of the Middle East, was a nice launch pad for several sprinters. Marcel Kittle (Argos Shimano) snapped up stage one, Peter Sagan (Cannondale) won two stages and Bouhanni closed Oman with his victory on the Corniche.

Goss earned his second place but in Oman he was 27th on stage 1, 137th on stage 2and 107th on stage 3 where Sagan got his second win. Sure, no need to make a big effort if you’re not sprinting for a win that day. Still, you do wonder.

In the Tour Down Under, Goss didn’t contest the sprints and instead watched Andre Greipel and his Lotto-Belisol train go apeshit. He did almost make the podium with a fourth place on the final stage.

Perhaps this is just a smart, slow and steady progression toward a major result in Milan-San Remo. But if Goss is truly twice the rider he was last year, well, a sprint win would be a good thing.
