Zabriskie tops Leonard Nimoy with Proud Mary rendition.

Creedence before Zabriskie.

Funny man and time trial champ Dave Zabriskie gave a stirring rendition of Proud Mary at the team launch in Boulder. He brought down the house and broke Jonathan Vaughters up. Chapeaux all around.

One rumor had already started that Zabriskie may tour later in the year with John Fogerty and a re-formed version of Creedence Clearwater Revival. According to Fogerty, they’re just waiting for Z-Man’s mutton chops to grow in a little more before hitting the road for a 22 city tour. The new band will go by Creedence Clearwater Zabriskie.

According the Songfacts website, there have been over 100 cover version of the song Proud Mary. Add one more with Zabriskie’s surprisingly soulful delivery. In terms of vocal talents, it was far better than the version sung by Start Trek’s Leonard Nimoy and available on a CD entitled Golden Throats. (William Shatner aka Captain Kirk does his rendition of Mr Tambourine Man.)

In addition, Songfacts says “The phrase “Proud Mary” reminded John Fogerty of a domestic washerwoman, which is what he started writing the song about. When he wrote the music, the first few chords reminded him of a paddle-wheel going around, and he thought of the Mississippi River. Instead of “Proud Mary” being a clean-up lady, “she” became a boat.”

Or in Zabriskie’s case a Cervelo carbon race bike with Mavic wheelset.
