Yipsan Bicycles. The People’s Choice winner.

A Yip in Yellow.

Yippee!

The 2010 sexy bike orgy, sometimes called the North American Handmade Bicycle Show, just wrapped up. Amazing bikes, enough to destroy your credit rating forever and reduce you to poverty and ecstasy at the same time.

Plenty of deserving winners but we’re going to single out the builder who took home the “People’s choice” award: Reynold Yip of Yipsan Bicycles in Fort Collins, Colorado. What is it about this bike mecca? Home to YipSan and the only true bike- inspired brewery, New Belgium Brewing.

His winning bike features a flower patterned wood mosaic on the front carrier. Yip trained to be an engineer, not an artist. “I should have had a career in management,” he said. Thankfully he avoided that mousetrap and builds bikes. “It is more fun,” he said. No argument there.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Yip did his engineering degree in the UK before setting up shop in Colorado. His Yipsan bikes have a distinctive logo, a circle and square design. According to Yip, the square one simulates an approval stamp used by ancient kings to signify their approval of policies and legislature. The meaning of the 4 Chinese words is “Hand made in steel.”

Our congratulations to Renold Yip. Who wouldn’t want to but a bicycle from a man whose father named him after a motorcycle chain?

Reader note: for the next month Twisted Spoke will be under construction. Expect short term glitches and hiccups. We’re switching to a new site host, changing the web address to www.atwistedspoke.com and completely redesigning the blog for the exciting changes to come — podcasts, video, assorted madness. Be patient — because quite frankly, it is gonna rock.
