Wiggo no go well in Vuelta. Fugslang very red.

Jakob Fuglsang (Leopard-Trek) is a happy man in the red jersey of Vuelta leader. Igor Anton of the Men of Orange got his Vuelta off to a flying start. Defending champion Vincenzo Nibali and Liquigas put in a superb ride to put time into all his GC rivals.

The big losers? Bradley Wiggins (Sky), Giro runner-up Michele Scarponi and Denis Menchov (Geox) all lost more than 30 seconds to Fuglsang — and that also means significant losses to Nibali.

The 13.5km team time trial along the Benidorm beachfront made for a thrilling launch of this year’s Helta Skelta Vuelta. Fuglsang’s Leopards, led by Fabian Cancellara, scorched the course in a time of 16:35, five seconds ahead of HTC-Highroad.

“The course today had everything – there was a hard start and it was technical,” said Fugslang. “You had to be careful not to blow up the whole team and not to crash.”

The Danish rider didn’t expect to cross the line first or finish the day on a podium with two hot Spanish babes. “We didn’t talk about it at the start; the goal today was to do a good team time trial,” he said. “We knew we could win if we rode at our maximum and we’d have a chance. I went as hard as I could and thought that someone would pass me at the end but they didn’t.”

Hola senoritas!

Technical was the word of the day and you could tell by the crashes and drops. Team Sky went down to just four riders before Xavier Zandio managed to catch back on. Nick Nuyens (Saxo Bank) and Davide Viganò (Leopard-Trek) crashed and Janez Brajkovic had an unfortunate mechanical which knocked Radio Shack back to 14th place.

Sports Director Steven de Jongh said on the Team Sky website that “It was a really tough start.” It was certainly ugly and dispiritng for a team with high hopes.  “We lost Kurt after a kilometre. He came down and so did Zandio. A rider sat up and didn’t really understand what was going on. It was tough to hear on the radio with the public shouting so it was a difficult situation,” said De Jongh. “So we are disappointed with the start but we have to look beyond that.”

Even the start ramp seemed to present a technical challenge with riders who seemed nervous right from the start. Lampre-ISD’s Marco Marzano had a rear wheel mechanical on the way down the ramp.

Fugslang simply did what the Brothers Schleck aways do in the first ten days of the Tour de France. Just follow that super fast and strong guy, Fabian Cancellara. Do that and good things happen.
