Vande Velde anti-crash device.

After crashing out of the Giro two years in a row and seriously compromising his buildup for the Tour de France, Christian Vande Velde is taking no chances.

The Garmin-Transitions rider will be using an argyle version of the Air Donut safety tube for all his training rides leading up to Le Grand Depart on July 3rd.

“Yeah, it’s cumbersome but I may also use it during the Tour de Suisse,” said Vande Velde. “I’m sure I’ll get a few wisecracks from other riders but I’m done with crashes wrecking my season.”

The guy teammates now jokingly refer to as Bionic Man, has matching metal plates in each shoulder. “If I have to crash, I want to be ready. The Air Donut gives me the best chance. Yeah, I look silly but the thing works perfect,” said Vande Velde.

A spokesman for Garmin-Transitions said the team has no plans to sell the Air Donut on their popular Argyle Club web store.

Ron, good to hear from you. I usually swing by the beehive once a week to see what you're up to. Keep up the good work — you['ve got some good blog territory staked out. Matt
