Tour de France countdown. 6 days to the Wiggo Show.

The 201

”]

The 2011 Tour to France route goes counter clockwise this year, crazy Pyrenees first, pristine Alps second.

The question is, which way is Bradley Wiggins going? Up or down, forward or backward?

In the year of his revelation, he took an astonishing 4th in the 2009 Tour de France. Then the usual star thing happened, his head blew up, ugly departure from Garmin, briefcases of cash from Sky, major expectations, crushing pressures and the sudden disappearance of his sense of humor.

He came into the 2010 Tour de France already road weary from the Giro knowing things were almost hopeless and a whole year of pointing toward a triumph in the Tour de France were instead going to be three weeks of pain and explanation. He finally cracked and by the third week of the Tour was blowing off steam, calling the shit was it was.

But there’s a Tour de France every year and to hear the stories, life is happier at Sky, the “robotic approach” replaced by good vibes, slagging camaraderie and most of all, results. Wiggins feels physically better and mentally lighter and the team more cohesive and it showed in a major victory in the Criterium du Dauphine.

Sky is rocking again and nobody makes fun of their designer jet-set lounge team bus anymore.

It’s the make-or-break Tour de France for Bradley Wiggins. Up or down, climbing or falling, GC threat or a great time trialer with a magic fun of form never to be seen again.

Wiggins himself is talking top five and it all the stars align for SKY, maybe even, gasp, that last podium step. Fellow brit thinks it’s a step too far and he’ll be lucky to break the top ten.

We’re ready for the Wiggo Show to begin. And we’re happy to report that his legs and his sense of humor seem to have returned.

History has shown us that the winner of the Dauphiné usually doesn’t do so well in the Tour, so I reckon a top ten is all Wiggins can hope for.

Dane, I agree with you. I like Wiggins for his sense of humor but top 10 is his best hope. Matt
