Sagan goes Cannibal in Oman.

Just two seasons ago, people called Edvald Boasson Hagen by the nickname Eddy Jr — in honor of his Merckx-like talents. That don’t call the quiet Norwegian that anymore. Shy, dull, but no Eddy.

Instead the title Eddy Jr has now been bestowed on the man-child, the Fastvakian, Peter Sagan who rides for Team Cannondale. Such are his immense and wide-ranging talents that he can win just about any WorldTour race or stage that isn’t reserved for pure climbers.

Lately the buzz on Sagan is getting so loud that some nutballs are even insisting that Sagan could someday win the Tour de France. No doubt you’ll be reading soon that Sagan can also win a gold medal is Nordic Ski Jumping in the next Winter Olympic Games and take the Middleweight boxing championship belt. Sagan Frenzy continues to hit new heights.

Sagan notched his first win of the 2013 season on stage two in the Tour of Oman, a stage with two climbs that split the peloton in pieces. There were the fast men and classics guys like Gilbert  in the back and in the front group there were star climbers Contador, Nibali and Froome and one not-surprising addition — Peter Sagan.

The leaders came flying of the last descent at 90K, then when Tony Gallopin,  Nibali and Martin Elminger (IAM Cycling) attacked hard, tossed in the towel. That is, except Sagan. He took off like a rabid dog that hadn’t eaten in a month, chased them down and ripped past to win by five seconds. The half interested crowd in Al Bustan were treated to one of Sagan’s victory poses as he pointed at his green jersey.

“I’m very happy. This is my first win of season. It’s also important for Cannondale, it’s the first win for the new team. The pressure’s off the whole team now,” said Sagan, who must have hit the Rosetta Stone English language DVD’s pretty hard over the Winter.

Sagan now takes over the leader’s jersey in Oman, the desert double feature that began last week with the Tour of Qatar. With his 10 second time bonus, he’s up nine on Gallopin and eleven on Elminger.

The genuine and original Eddy Merckx was on hand In Oman to watch Sagan destroy the field in full Cannibal style. If there’s an Eddy Jr, in the peloton, it’s Peter Sagan.
