Phinney wins Eneco prologue. Arriving fashionably early.

Phinney fast.

So much for sloth and clothes shopping.

After admitting a few days ago that his approach to pro cycling had been lazy and that he spent too much time on his fashion wardrobe, Phinney crushed the 5.7 kilometer time trial. The 21 year old beat Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky) by seven seconds with David Millar (Garmin-Cervelo) another second back in third.

“I’m really happy. I just went out there and felt good. It was just a power course, and I was able to go through it really fast,” said Phinney. Faster than a fashionista runs out of a Sears men’s clothing department. The horror, the horror.

It was a short, technical course which gave Phinney a showcase for his pursuit talents and bike handling skills. There were no designer boutiques along the way so his speed never dropped below blistering. Best of all, it was his first professional win.

“I’ve had a relatively relaxed week, and it was all about building up for this prologue. I was surprised how good I was in the warm up, and I knew it was going to be a good day. It was wet and windy. I knew I was going to take some risks and I’ve got the scars to prove it, but the weather cleared up.”

Next up in Eneco, tomorrow’s  192.1km stage from Oosterhout – Sint Willebrord. “It’s a good race for me, and racing in Belgium and Holland is my thing. There’s a time trial in a couple of days so if I can hold the lead through to then, I will. I will look forward to the challenge.”

Phinney looked good and fast on his bike today. A good aero helmet and a BMC skin-suit is all a man needs to impress the high fashion set.
