Belgian pro Philippe Gilbert wants everyone to know that he’s no Eddy Merckx so please stop the comparisons. “Eddy Merckx was unique. There was one Eddy Merckx, and there will never be another Eddy Merckx,’ said Gilbert.
“I am not Eddy. I am not Belgian Formula One driver Ickx Boutsen or Michael Jordan or Pele,” said Gilbert. “Jordan played basketball and Pele soccer so it would be silly to compare me to them. I don’t see what a round ball has to do with a bicycle. Plus, I am not a good driver.”
The Omega Pharma Lotto rider made it clear that any comparisons are simply invalid. “I am not Johnny Deep or Frank Sinatra or Deepak Chopra or Steve Jobs — although I love my new iphone 4,” said Gilbert, just warming up. “Chopra, well, I like his books but really, our characteristics are quite different.”
While cycling journalists around the world are comparing Gilbert to the greatest performers and personalities in history, Gilbert says he just doesn’t think of himself that way. “Someone said I was like Al Gore, another insisted I was like Lil’ Wayne, crazy stuff. People need to control themselves. I am not Pablo Picasso or Charles Lindberg or James Watson and John Crick. I did not discover DNA, I’m not good with science,” said Gilbert.
“I am just Philippe Gilbert, no more, no less,” said Gilbert. “People should calm down.”
