At the start of this season, Garmin-Cervelo’s visionary Jonathan Vaughters set a team goal of being the number one English speaking team in the world.

“At the end of the day, I don’t care about Spanish or French,” said Vaughters. “They’re nice romance languages but our focus is being the best English speaking team out there.”

However, the latest UCI rankings are not good news for Garmin-Cervelo. The team is down in 12th place a whopping 250 points behind number 1 ranked HTC-Highroad.

It’s not a rosy picture for the English speaker competition as the old men of Radio Shack have climbed into 3rd place based on recent wins by skilled speaker Chris Horner (Tour of California winner) and the linguistically gifted and fast-riding Levi Leipheimer (Tour de Suisse winner.)

Garmin-Cervelo is also looking up at BMC Racing who have climbed to the 6th spot and the British contingent, Sky Procycling who have the 9th spot.

Vaughters was at a loss to explain the disappointing 12th position. “We’ve got skilled English speakers. Tyler is good, Christian is good, Hesjedahl is Canadian so that isn’t a problem and David Millar just wrote his own autobiography. Even Van Summeren’s English is decent so I don’t have an explanation.”

With the Tour de France just two weeks away, the hope is that Garmin-Cervelo will improve their UCI English speaker rankings. “Is English holding us back? I can’t really say,” said Vaughters. “We may have to take a look at Spanish, that’s an easy language to pick up. But we’re not done with English just yet. We still have a few cards to play.”

What's the Spanish translation for "We don't care what he took…Let him ride!" Never mind…I don't want to know, and it appears that the Spanish have their own translation.
