Garmin-Barracuda. A team-wide off day in Milan San Remo?

A dark horse that stayed dark.

You know that Milan San Remo was a bad race for Garmin-Barracuda when there’s no mention of it on the team website. Home page news is the new 2012 team jerseys are in stock, there’s a limited edition poster available and that Sep Vanmarcke won Omloop a few weeks ago.

Twisted Spoke wonders what happened to the argyle army in La Primavera. Dark horse contender Heinrich Haussler finished a distant 68th place after being held up behind crashes. Ace pprinter Tyler Farrar, who normally is a strong rider capable of getting over a climb, rolled in at 109th. Even big man Gorilla sprinter Andre Greipel did better than that.

Granted, it wasn’t their kind of race but it was certainly an underwhelming performance in the first Monument of the season. Haussler admitted to excitement and trepidation in his blog days before the race. He was certainly correct on the trepidation.

If Vincenzo Nibali and Peter Sagan of Liquigas admit to both satisfaction and disappoint, we’re pretty sure that the entire Garmin-Barracuda squad would go with disappointment. No results to build on going into April and the cobbled classics of Flanders and Roubaix. Fabian Cancellara will be flying but what about the boys from Boulder, Colorado?

You know that when a team with no real sponsor — Project 1T4i —  places three riders in the top 20, that your own team has had an off day. Sort of like the entire Garmin-Barracuda squad felt like Mark Cavendish. Nothing in the tank.
