Evans has surprise for BMC’s Cummings: you’re a climber.

It may be that Cadel Evans is still in some kind of post Tour de France victory haze. It’s hard for him to see clearly in the lingering euphoria of the well deserved and brilliantly calculated Tour win in 2011.

While most cycling fans questioned the roster additions of classics stars Thor Hushovd and Philippe Gilbert to the BMC roster for the 2012 Tour instead of signing some major climbers to help the Aussie score another win, Evans states he is more than thrilled. His roster rocks!

First he’s talking up young phenom Tejay Van Garerden as a rider “under the radar” who will soon be shedding the field on the last climb in the Pyrenees and Alps. Well, we certainly hope so and Tejay is a confident kick ass guy.

But perhaps the real surprise is that Evans in his recent interview with Pez Cycling News claims that BMC team signed not one but two climbers to support him the La Grand Boucle. Yes, Brit Steve Cummings may be surprised to learn he’s now a super domestique climber.

Evans described his second climber thusly: “Steve Cummings has had a few injuries and health problems last year, but that is where we looked to strengthen our climbing.” Well, okay, nothing wrong with runaway optimism at this point in the season but shortly thereafter Cummings crashed hard in the Volta ao Algarve. Hard to climb with a fractured pelvis.

Climber is open to question. Cummings, who came over from Team Sky, was listed on the Sky bio last year as an “All-rounder, rouleur (strong rider on the flat).” That doesn’t sound like a Chris Horner or Andreas Kloden — two climbers that rival Andy Schleck can count on to do major damage on anything hors categoire.

Note to Steve: you might want to stop eating for a few weeks and double the hill repeats when you’re fully recovered — Cadel thinks you’re his guy in the mountains, the super painful ones in France.

Well, we hope Cadel is right. Tejay Van Gareren is a huge talent and we think he’s only going higher. But if you’re pinning your hopes on another Tour win on Steve Cummings pacing you up the Alps, well, good luck with that.
