BMC’s Phinney wins Giro time trial. Life altered.

Phinney fast.

Taylor Phinney said a win and the maglia rosa in the opening time trial of the Giro d’Italia would be a “life changing” event.

Consider his life forever changed. The young American torched the 8.7k course around Herning in 10:26.

Things played out pretty much exactly how Phinney had scripted it. As he said the day before, “The corners aren’t terribly technical, the roads are wide. You’ll be able to keep your speed without braking.”

High speed and no braking got the job done and BMC finally has a high profile win. The young man who admitted last year that he loved spending money on clothes, now has a stylish pink jersey. The BMC Time machine has the ideal rider on board in Denmark. Phinney is now the third American to slip on that coveted jersey.

The man right behind Phinney is Sky’s Geraint Thomas (Sky). His opening statement was “I’ll just go flat out and see what happens,” It almost did happen but he finished nine seconds back. A major disappointment for Thomas but hey, at least the Sky team bus wasn’t broken into like NetApp’s — things can always be worse.

Riding with stitches in his chin from a pre-race crash, Garmin-Barracuda’s Alex Rasmussen put in a terrific ride to finish third. Last year his forgetful nature got him in trouble with the UCI’s whereabouts program but there was no confusion today — he was in Herning, thirteen second behind Phinney.

Old man and BMC teammate George Hincapie said Phinney had “called out this race back in January.” Well, damn good call.

I hope the team mechanic put air bags in Taylor handlebars.
