Agentinian squad punches way into Giro d’Italia 2015 wildcard list.

2015 Giro Wildcard?

The organizers of the Giro d’Italia announced today that Argentinian Continental Squad Buenos Aires Provincia has been added to the list of potential wildcard invitees.

The decision was taken after the team’s dramatic performances in the Tour de San Luis where one of their riders punched Lotto Belisol’s Kenny De Haes in the face. Then the team director of Buenos Aires Provincia ran over Garmin-Sharp’s Tyler Farrar with his car, causing significant injures.

“We like their attacking style, their passion for cycling,” said Aldo Vanucci, of RCS SPort, the organization who runs the Giro d’Italia. “The Giro is about bold action — we invited Yellow Fluo when last year under the banner of Vini Fantini-Selle Italia, their riders Danilo di Luca and Mauru Santambrogio both embarrassed the Giro with EPO positives. Many people said that was a bad decision, but we said, no, you’re welcome back.”

Reached for comment, former Giro d’Italia boss Michele responded with shock that Buenos Aires Provincia would make the 2015 wild card list. “My God, what has happened to my beloved Giro? First, they select Yellow Fluo and now they’re talking about that crazy team from Argentina which throw punches and runs people over. How much dishonor do they want in one stage race? I am sick to my stomach.”

Several pro riders including BMC’s Taylor Phinney have already reacted to the Giro’s interest in Buenos Aires Provincia. “One rider punches Dehaes in sprint on St 3, today their team car runs over Tyler Farrar and how they’re maybe going to Giro?. #wtf,” Phinney wrote on Twitter.

The announcement also took officials at IAM Cycling and MTN-Qhubeka, two squads who narrowly missed out on Giro wildcard, by compete surprise. “I’m struggling to understand what the Giro criteria is anymore,” said Willem Debunck, a spokesperson for the SOuth African squad. “We’ve got this wonderful mission to help feed people in Africa and this other team is beating people up and nearly killing people with their cars. I just don’t get it.”

The controversial surrounding the selection of Buenos Aires Provincia for a potential 2014 wildcard invitation is something the Giro is prepared to accept. “We are not the boring Tour de France,” said Vanucci.  We are keeping a close eye on Buenos Aires Provincia for the future. A Swiss team is perhaps a little understated, those Africans are perhaps too nice. We want drama and passion — the blood must run hot or the pedals do not turn.”
