WADA prohibited substances: Bacon Cheeseburgers?

The World Anti-Doping Association (WADA) just released the list pf prohibited substances for 2018.

“WADA is pleased to publish the 2018 Prohibited List,” said WADA President, Sir Craig Reedie. “It is vital that all athletes and entourage take the necessary time to consult the List; and that, they contact their respective anti-doping organizations (ADOs) if they have any doubts as to the status of a substance or method.”

That’s all well and good and overall, there were no major changes to the prohibited list other than removing hemp seed oil and alcohol. However, there was one rather odd addition that took many observers by surprise: Double Western Bacon Cheeseburgers.

WADA offered no explanation for this inclusion or what possible performance benefits would come from a Double Western Bacon Cheese Burger. In a sport such as pro cycling where an optimal power to weight ratio is critical, in ingestion of such a menu item would seem to be counter-productive.

Anti-doping agencies around the globe are now waiting for clarification and an approved scientific protocol for testing for the Double Western Bacon Cheeseburger.
