Tour de France debuts new "dunce cap" helmet.

New Tour De France "dunce cap."

You have the yellow jersey to designate the best rider. Now, Tour de France officials have announced there will be a special helmet for the dumbest rider. The specially designed cone-shaped helmet will be awarded after each stage to the rider or riders who show the least good sense, lack of tactical prowess and general bone-headedness.

After stage three, the so-called “dunce cap” helmet was awarded to several top riders for missing the break that only Lance Armstrong was smart enough to notice. Cadel Evans, Andy Schleck, Carlos Sastre and Armstrong’s own team-mates Levi Leipheimer and Alberto Contador were all handed the not-so-coveted dunce helmet. Riders are instructed to go stand in the corner of the tour press room and not speak or turn around for 30 minutes.

Upon being told of the new helmets, Armstrong could only laugh. Not only had he jumped from 10th to 3rd place in the overall standings, he’d made the other GC contenders look foolish, having schooled them in the oldest maxim of the tour: “Always ride at the front.”

Alberto Contador refused to don the Dunce cap and was immediately fined 5,000 euros by the UCI. Robert Haskins, a spokesman for the helmet manufacturer Giro said “the helmet is super-light. As far as dunce caps go, it’s the lightest, most aerodynamic one in the world.”
