IDEO bikes

It might interest people to know (or not even remotely) that I have a real writing job. A professional one, an actual career that involves real money.

Life is just not sitting idly in a coffee shop with a laptop pontificating about the world of cycling. There are bills to be paid, the wife likes food in the refrigerator and the kid’s karate lessons are a small fortune.

But it’s been tougher than usual these last weeks to fit Twisted with Work. Still, there are bikes everywhere and especially at work — if you’re working at a cool place.

That place is IDEO in San Francisco. Which among its many brilliant things, has a fleet of new, well maintained cruiser bikes always parked in the front lobby for anyone to use. They even have helmets, a lock and a floor pump ready.

Now, maybe that’s not headline news in Europe but here in the United States that’s still pretty cool and ahead of the curve. But then IDEO is a company known for its visionary thinking and product design for major corporations all over the world.

They have some of the smartest, coolest, friendliest and most energetic people you’d ever want to be locked in a conference room with. Me, I’m here, working on new concepts in the meat stick snack category but wishing I was out on my bike. Or at least blogging about biking.

Hey, dude. You'll be on the road soon. The Tour of California begins in six weeks. Maybe you'll need to pack a folding bike.

Sounds like you work for a cool company.

I work at a public health unit and I get an extra half hour at lunch if I do a physical activity like running or cycling. Now that’s forward thinking.

I also dream of being on my bike. Or eating meat sticks.

You had me until “meat stick snack category”…glad you put it at the end of the post. Perhaps you can combine your two careers? Specialized ‘Slims Jims’? Beef Jerky for Bianchi?

Money, you're always working the angle. You know I love that. I'll be at the tour of California and for three weeks in France for the tour. And the only thing that holds me back is missing a month of hanging with you guys at the pool listening to Latin music. SHit, you can't have everything all the time.
