Stetina, training in Tahoe

Wake up, Tahoe. Almost time to ride.

Everyone knows how famous and fabulous the Levi’s GranFondo has become. Great course, amazing scenery, awesome party and gourmet grub. It’s the creme de la fondo.

So, now imagine the folks that put that together had a big, new idea: Lake Tahoe, California. Start at NorthStar Resort, outside the charming former mining and railroad town of Truckee, and head out to Lake Tahoe. Yes, you need to be there — it’s September 22 – 24, with the ride on that Sunday.

Believe me, the terrain is exceptional — Lake Tahoe happens to be one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the world. So that’s enough to get your Strava all worked up.

Now bring in Trek-Segafredo pro Peter Stetina to headline and steer the event, with lots of climbing and beer and time segments. Invite former pro and cycling bon vivant Ted King, recently retired Tour de France top ten Andrew Talansky (he used to train out of Truckee!) and even Dutch crazy man and Sunweb domestique Laurens Ten Dam to join the festivities. (Ten Damn loves Tahoe so much he and his family live up there part time.)

Now we have ourselves a thrill on the near horizon. The inaugural year of the Sierra Prospect sets out two challenging and stunning routes, a 50 mile with 4500′ of elevation gain and a 98 mile with 9,700′ in elevation. They’ve even put a cool twist in the road — a road rally event with timed segments.

The Sierra Prospect kicks off Friday evening with a special new beer release (in honor of Stetina) in nearby Sparks, Nevada at theRevision Brewing Company. You”ll have first crack at Prospectin’ Pete’s Pale Ale. (There’s a shuttle from Northstar resort so you’ve got it easy, back and forth.)

Saturday, there’s a “loosen the legs” Segafredo coffee ride with Stetina and later in the evening a hyper-fancy looking dinner gala at Northstar’s Overlook. Based on the picture on the website, you should wear your best Rapha with a cumberbund. Kidding. There’s a 3-course meal that’s paired with Meeker Wines, specialty western cocktails from Patrón, and Revision Brewing Co Beer.

Then Sunday, the Sierra Prospect main event and festival and awards ceremony. Some of the best, most spectacular riding in the Tahoe region. All in all, an awesome aerobic weekend of cycling fun, food and drink and Tahoe goodness.
