Sagan second in Milan San Remo pre-vote.

Vote too close to count

Yes, it’s another second place for poor Peter Sagan, the man with the rainbow stripes and no wins in 2016.

He’s lost to Greg Van Avermaet twice already this year in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Tirreno-Adriatico. Now, he is the runner-up to Fabian Cancellara at Milan San Remo and he hasn’t even turned a pedal yet. Tough year so far.

Yes, cyclingnews is running a reader poll on who will win the first Monument of the season and so far Mr, Spartacus, in his retirement year, is the top vote getter at 349. Sagan (Tinkof-Saxo) takes second just behind the winner of Strade Bianche (and two time trials) with 341 votes.

Yes, it’s practically a photo finish with the Swiss champion leading by a scant 8 votes. Can Sagan close the gap with a desperate lunge before the actual, real, live Milan San Remo this Saturday? This could be neck and neck and Sagan may yet pull out the voter victory.

Would he consider stuffing the ballot box, encouraging all his many followers on twitter to go take the cyclingnews poll and cast a vote in his favor, thereby giving him a huge seat push past Cancellara in the final mad seconds?

Sagan has over 390,000 followers and could easily crush Spartacus. The trouble is that Cancellara (Trek-Segafredo) could launch a vicious counter attack with his own army of twitter fans. At 447,000 followers, he could deal a death blow to Sagan, making sure the Slovakian finishes second yet again.

The pre-race is on and third place Michael Matthews (Orica-GreenEdge) isn’t even close at 262 votes. This is a mano-a-mano battle between giants, a Milan San Remo showdown before La Primavera even gets underway.

In just 10 minutes the score has now changed with Cancellara opening up a double digit lead of 10 votes, 355 to 345.

The tension is KILLING us.
