Pro cycling boxing event: Bouhanni vs. Moscon.

Bouhanni. Gloves on.

The UCI announced a special cycling event for Novemeber, 11th, 2017. It’s the first UCI sanctioned boxing event, which will pit Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) against Gianni Mascon (Team Sky). The three-round exhibition bout will be broadcast live from Les Bergieres indoor sports arena in Lausanne Switzerland.

The pugnacious Bouhanni is a skilled amateur boxer and is well-known within the pro peloton for his aggressive, physical behavior. In the 2017 Tour de France, the race jury fined Bouhanni after he took at swat at Quickstep Floors’ Jack Bauer. Often relegated in sprints for pushing, shoving or punching, the Frenchman from Epinel will enter the ring as the prohibitive favorite.

The opponent Gianni Moscon is also a fighter of some note. Just recently he was accused by FDJ’s Sébastien Reichenbach of intentionally causing him to crash at the Tre Valli Varesine race in Italy.. There have be other altercations during the 2017 season which saw him suspended by his team for racist insults against FDJ’s Kevin Reza during the Tour of Romandie. While he will surely be seen as the underdog in this bout, Mascon said that he is “Ready to defend my name where I need to.”

Tickets will go on sale November 1st and will be available on the UCI website. Former UCI president Patrick McQuaid will referee the fight, held under strict application of Broughton’s rules, with a 10 second count-off for knockdowns.

Early odds posted by betting websites Ladbrokes and Willian Hill have Bouhanni’s odds of winning at 3-1. However, SkyBet, perhaps with inside news from Team Sky, has the fight listed as almost even with a slight edge for Bouhanni. Both fighter will weigh in the evening before the fight. The French will sport a silk robe in his familiar Cofidis red while Moson has reportedly opted for Sky black.

Un-confirmed rumors have begun to circulate that Mascon is now training with mixed martial arts superstar Conor McGregor, who recently lost his fight against Floyd Mayweather while still pocketing an estimated $30 million dollars. The 6’0 tall Italian does benefit from a significant advantage over the 5′ 9″ Bouhanni which will help offset the Frenchman’s superior boxing skills.

No purse has been announced yet but all proceeds will go towards purchasing the UCI’s new mechanical doping test equipment.
