Moser ambushed

Where did he come from?

Saw a headline that said “Moser stunned” and misread it as Moser stoned.

Maybe that’s not such a mistaken reading because yo, dude, what are you thinking, bro? Moreno Moser figured it was just a  two-man game for victory in stage 18 of the Giro d’Italia.

The Cannondale rider with the famous family name was all set to beat Gianluca Brambilla (Etixx-Quickstep) and never saw Brambilla’s teammate Matteo Trentin catch on in the final few hundred meters and then instantly blow by the both of them.

Wowza. Now Moser claims his radio wasn’t working so he didn’t realize that Trentin was flying back into contention. Then again, there’s this cool trick that old pros use in a race when they’re figuring out their tactics: look behind you.

Moser was psychologically destroyed after crossing the finish line. He knew he’d just blown a rare and golden opportunity for a stage win in his Italian grand tour. Moments like those don’t arrive often and he simply couldn’t believe his misfortune.

Uhh, look behind you.

It’s going to be some time before bio-technology develops an “eyes in back of head” device. Don’t think that’s going to happen for quite some time. Nor has the UCI approved any rear-mounted helmet video camera to provide intel on riders attacking from behind.

Until those magic days come, Moreno Moser is just going to have to get in the habit of turning his head. You never wanted to be stunned — or stoned — in a WorldTour stage.

Mo, look behind you!!!!!
