Yes, stage one of the Gila was a thrilla. More wisdom to come so hold onto your junk.

Okay, back, had to slip into some silk boxers — my junk was chafing.

Levi, the 2009 defending champ –  and Mellow Johnny #2 after Lance —  was the strongest man up the final Mogollon climb. Which put him in first place, DZ Nuts’ Tom Danielson in second and Cesar Grajales (OUCH-Bahati Foundation) in third. An amusing podium if there ever was: Mellow, Nuts, OUCH.

“Compared to last year it seemed more competitive,” said Leipheimer after the stage. “Dave Zabriskie, Tom Danielson and the others were all going well. The beginning of the stage wasn’t bad but the winds picked up and made the race quite a bit harder.”

Some commentators may find this whole Gila thing kind of odd for prep work but not Armstrong or Leipheimer. “I am on schedule for my first goal of the season, the Tour of California. After a useful break, it is always good to measure yourself against other riders.” said Leipheimer. “It is also good to get out there and into the routine of racing.”

The first stage of the 2010 Gila is in the record books but there are plenty more to come. Gila is a big nut to crack.
