Goss takes final stage in Tour of California. Milan-San Remo lite.

Goss after the win.

It wasn’t Milan San Remo, but Matthew Goss will gladly take it. The HTC-ighroad rider took the final stage of the Amgen Touyr of Califronia that finished in sunny Thousand Oaks.

While TEam SKy dominated the sprtins in stage two and three, the aussie finally got his win after a week of hard work. The train went to work and Bernard Esiel brought him to the 2k mark before Liquigas and Sky managed the muscle in.

In the final blistering rish to the line, it was teammate Leigh Howard giving him the textbook leadout and Goss easily beat Peter Sagan (Liguigas) and Greg Henderson (Sky).

“The guys worked perfectly to control race from early on and then Leigh did a great job and dropped me off with 150m to go. I couldn’t have asked for a better leadout,” said Goss.

The final stage went to HTC-Highroad who didn’t have Mark Cavendish here this year but Goss was a more than capable and confidentr substitute.

“It’s a great way to finish off the week, Tejay finished as best young rider, and now we’ve capped off the week in perfect fashion,” said Goss.

The tour of California was once again a showcase for the powerful Protour teams. Sky took two stages, Garmin won the time trail, Leipheimer and Horner of Radio Shack won the Mount Baldy summit finish and the overall title. Liquigas got yet another win from Peter Sagan, his third in two editions of the California tour. And let’s not forget old man Winter put in a dominating performacne in the opening stage, simply shutting everyone down.
