The whole town of Pinto, Alberto Contador’s hometown, turned out to see the victorious hero return from the Giro d’Italia. Contador crushed his rivals with only Astana’s duo of Fabio Aru and Mikel Landa even getting close.
With the Tour de France now on the horizon, two of the other top contenders decided to pay a visit. Slipping almost unnoticed in the surging, enthusiastic crowd, Sky’s Chris Froome and reigning Tour champion Vincenzo Nibali decided to get a look at Contador in person.
Froome, disguised as a local baker and Nibali, wearing a fake beard and sunglasses, looked for any signs of fatigue or mental weariness. Instead what they found was a buoyant and confident Contador. Quickly boarding a train in Madrid, they headed back to Tenerife, concerned and in need of extra wattage.
