Froome hits Sky jackpot. Pity the Bison.

Froome is so money.

Chris Fromme just hit the Nearly Won Vuelta jackpot. Numbers weren’t announced but with Sky’s deep pockets and several other teams ready to open the bank vault, there’s no question he cashed in.

“Chris’ performance at the Tour of Spain was tremendously exciting and generated much interest and competition for his services from other teams,” said Team Sky manager Dave Brailsford via a team statement.  “In light of this we are very pleased that he has chosen Team Sky as the best place to continue his career.”

Maybe Froome doesn’t have the huge money fellow Sky Brit Bradley Wiggins has stashed away. Maybe he doesn’t have the retro scooter or the amazing collection of 60’s Mod records. Maybe he doesn’t even have the funny twitter feed. Still, he now joins Wiggins in the swimming pool filled with euros.

“Standing on the podium at this year’s Vuelta a España was the highlight of my professional career so far,” said the Kenyan-born rider.. “But that success was only possible because of everyone at Team Sky, both on and off the road, and so I am absolutely delighted to be signing an extension to stay with the team for the next three years.”

Froome is now making far more money than Vuelta winner Juan Jose Cobo of the steaming shoe iron Geox squad. That team management doesn’t even know if the footwear sponsor plans to keep the team going. Cobo admitted to struggling with depression for 18 months. When he gets the news of Froome’s big payday, he might be depressed again. “El Bisonte” may yet go begging.

But that’s not Froome’s problem, he’s financially set. His only issue is now living up to his paycheck and the bigger expectations. That’s something Bradley Wiggins knows all about. Hopefully he’ll pass on the good advice.
