Cancellera considers hour record, decides on 30 minutes instead.

An hour? Who has time for that?

Fabian Cancellera debated back and forth the idea of making a run at the UCI Hour record. Ultimately he decided sixty minutes was too long and has now set his sights on the 30 minute record.

“An hour is an eternity. Who can focus that long — it’s exhausting,” said the Swiss time trial champion. “Who ever came up with sixty minutes is an idiot. I’m double-booked as it is.”

The demanding requirements and specific training for the hour record forced Cancellara to re-evaluate his thinking. “At 43, 45 minutes, I was getting really tired so I said screw it. The 30 minute mark makes more sense. I’ll still be in the record book with half the work,” said the man they call Spartacus.

The Olympic gold medalist and World Champion time trialer went on to explain the hurdles. “It’s not an hour, you know, it’s more than a hour. Try weeks, months, training. It’s a time suck.”

Cancellara was to attempt the record in Montichiari (Brescia), Italy on a 250-meter wood surface velodrome that opened in May. However, he is now considering a bike path near his home.

“That’s the problem with the hour record. It’s too time consuming. I’ll just going to knock off the 30 minute record some Saturday morning after coffee” said Cancellara. “That’s all the time I can spare.

Thanks Jenn. I like to think I have the funniest cycling blog on the web but then I have the only funny cycling blog. It's a small niche but it's mine. Hope you'll keep reading. I do actual race coverage but it's a slow time of year.
